If a cotton T-shirt you have recently bought or have been given is too large for you, fear not!

Cotton fabrics are actually easy to shrink compared to other kinds of fabrics.

Here are some ways and tips on how you can shrink a cotton shirt:

Boiling water

Boil water in a large pot. After boiling, remove the pot from heat and put your cotton shirt on it. Let the shirt soak for at least 20 minutes.

Note that the warmer the water and the longer it is exposed to the warm water, the greater the shrinkage of the shirt would be.

Drain the water and let the shirt cool, wring the shirt afterwards and let it air dry.

Washing machine

Your cotton shirt could shrink when it tumbles against the sides of the washer and the dryer.

Wash the cotton shirt in the washing machine with hot water. Afterwards, transfer the shirt into a drying machine and use a medium-heat setting for it to dry.

Other tips on shrinking cotton shirts:

In order to reduce the colors which have bleed out, you can add a cup of white vinegar on the shrinking method you do.

Most shirts which have been labeled as “pre-shrunk” could not be shrunk any further.

Make sure to cool the shirt for a bit to avoid burning yourself.
